Very often as managers we continue doing what helped us get to where we are. We continue to work, behave, and speak in the same way that we did in the past. Yes, it’s good to work hard but every manager at your level is also working hard so how does that differentiate you? Remember that every organisation has a pyramid like career structure that gets narrower as you climb the corporate ladder so how do you develop the edge to get noticed and promoted to become a CXO?

To get you started on your journey to become a CXO, here is a quiz to help you understand how ready you are to get ahead in your quest to become a CXO

Here is a 5-step process that will help you get started on this journey.

1. DISCOVER

Discover what is expected from you as a CXO? Discover what CEOs expect from a CXO? No, it’s NOT only about working hard or doing what is required in your job description. What are you doing that helps solve a problem for the company? How are you contributing to increasing revenue, reducing costs, or improving service?

Discover yourself. Amidst the noise in the environment and the FOMO (fear of missing out) we often forget who we truly are and join the herd and take the job that pays us the most. After a while we get dissatisfied, stressed, lose our enthusiasm, and look for another job that we believe might help make us happier. The cycle continues. Yes, money is important, but does your work resonate with what your inner calling is? Do you know what your purpose is? Are you aware of your strengths and values?

2. TRANSFORM

You need to transform from being a manager to becoming a CXO. What got you to becoming a manager will not get you to become a CXO. Playing a sport at your school level is different from playing at the university level or at the state level and very different from playing internationally. Every pretty butterfly was once an ugly larva. To become a CXO you need to transform, and that means changing the way you think, behave and act. You need to change at the “Identity” level, build success habits and reprogram your mind for success. You need to fall in love with the process of transformation and the person you are becoming in the journey.

3. THRIVE

Once you have discovered what is required and are in the process of transformation it’s time to thrive at work. How good are you at managing your boss, peers and subordinates? How good are you at managing politics? How well do you network within the organisation? How well connected are you with the senior management in the organisation? Are you able to build a high performing team? How good are your listening skills? These and many more skills are required to help you thrive at your workplace.

4. CREATE INFLUENCE

You need to create influence in your organisation and industry. How well do you make presentations and are able to sell your ideas and get support within your organisation? How well are you able to communicate in meetings? Do you have Executive presence? Do people listen to you in meetings? Remember resources are limited and if you are unable to build a strong case for your team, they will be diverted elsewhere. Are you well known in your industry? Do you have a linked in profile that is updated and compelling? Are you getting noticed in your industry by senior people and headhunters?

5. ATTRACT

If you have done steps 1 to 4, chances are that you are known in your industry. Do you get called by head-hunters for jobs regularly? Would your boss choose you as his successor? If there was a vacant role in your company, would you be the first person to be considered? When was the last time you updated your CV? Do you prepare for interviews or prefer to answer on the fly? Do you know that there is an unpublished job market that exists which is several times bigger than the published job market and that they pay much better than a regular job? Do you know how to find those unpublished jobs? These are just some of the issues you need to be aware of on your journey to become a CXO.
